About Ankur Pandya

With over 25 years of distinguished service as a consultant in both secondary care and military settings—including the NHS—I am a highly experienced plastic and reconstructive surgeon with a global reputation for clinical excellence, leadership, and education. My clinical expertise encompasses the comprehensive management of hand pathology, notably Dupuytren’s disease (with a seminal publication in the field), peripheral nerve surgery, paediatric hand surgery, tendon transfers, peripheral nerve tumours, spastic hand management and emergency hand trauma. I serve as the lead for limb amputation services at QA Hospital, implementing targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) for both primary and salvage patients.

As the principal reconstructive surgeon for complex colorectal, perineal, vaginal, vulval, abdominal wall, lower limb, and hand defects, I deliver advanced surgical solutions for some of the most challenging cases. My international humanitarian work spans 52 missions, focusing on cleft surgery, paediatric hand surgery, and post-burn reconstruction—roles that have included Regional Medical Director and Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Operation Smile worldwide.

My military career includes four operational deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, where I managed ballistic and blast trauma, burns, and damage control surgery. I have held senior advisory and leadership posts within the Royal Air Force, including Consultant Advisor (2011–2022), Clinical Director of the Tactical Medical Wing (2023–2025), and Medical Director of the Hospital Staging Unit (2023–2024). I gained extensive experience in administration, logistics, personnel management, and strategic planning from the above roles. I have also served as the Associate Dean for the Defence Deanery from 2019–2024.

A passionate educator, I have held numerous teaching, training, and leadership roles at local, regional, national, and international levels, including College Tutor, Regional Representative, Training Programme Director for Plastic Surgery in the Thames Valley and Wessex region and the Assoc Dean position as above. I have contributed to curriculum standards as a member of the Specialty Advisory Committee in Plastic Surgery and served as Honorary Secretary (2014–2016) and Council Member (2019–2022) of BAPRAS.

Internationally, I am a Visiting Professor of Plastic Surgery in Nepal and Romania, an examiner for national and international plastic and hand surgery boards, and a key leader in OSCE development. As Vice President (President-Elect) of EBOPRAS, I am dedicated to standard setting and credentialing across European training centres. I am also a trustee for Saving Lives International, advancing disaster relief, training, and teaching in India, Nepal, and with plans to expand into East Africa.

My career is characterised by a commitment to clinical excellence, innovation, academia, education, humanitarianism, and leadership—delivering sustainable impact in patient care and surgical training worldwide
